What is antimicrobial resistance?

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi, develop resistance to antimicrobials, i.e., antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics. Resistance can lead to untreatable infections and pose serious risks to medical procedures such as surgery and chemotherapy.

In 2019, infections causing an estimated 1.27 million deaths worldwide were attributable to bacterial AMR, with the highest impact in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia; and 4.95 million deaths were associated with bacterial AMR.
